Sant Jordi

The legend :
The story took place in the town of MontBlanc, near Tarragona .

The legend goes:
"A long time ago, a rich family lived there. They had a son as beautiful as a rose. His name was Jordi. When Jordi grew up, he became a big warrior and a good horseman. He was very famous.

Near this town, a horrible monster lived : it could walk, swim, fly and it had a breath that poisoned the air. People were afraid of it. The population gave it some sheep and other animals to eat. When it ate the food, the king ordered that the young girls of the village would be food for the dragon. And the girls, one by one, were eaten.

On day, it was the turn of the king's daughter. The king didn't want to lose the princess. She said :
- "Dad, it's my turn ; I'll meet my fate."
The princess left the village and she went to the dragon's den. Meanwhile, Jordi came on his white horse with a brilliant armour and a while shield with a red cross on it .
He said to her :
- "Don't be afraid ; I'll kill the monster."

He took his spear and he killed the dragon under the eyes of the people of the village .
Jordi said to the princess :
- "Now, my princess, go ahead, I'll follow you because I want to speak with your father and with the inhabitants." The king thanked him and Jordi advised them to be good christians. And he vanished mysteriously. A rose bush grew every year where the dragon fell. That's why today every year on 23th of April in the "plaça del poble" in Andorra la Vella , we celebrate the day of Saint Jordi with two symbols : the rose and the book. Men have to give a rose to the women they love and the women have to give a book to the men.
